Project objectives
The aim of the CHARGE project is to review the regulatory instruments promoting the development, production, reuse, and innovative, safe, and sustainable recycling of batteries, aligning them with the new European Union regulation covering the entire value chain and thereby strengthening their implementation at transregional and European level.
In particular, by identifying and sharing innovative solutions at interregional level, CHARGE aims to contribute to the improvement of regional policy instruments to support and strengthen the battery value chain through a collaborative, multilevel, and circular approach.
The role of AFIL
With regard to the battery sector, AFIL acts as a facilitator between Lombardy Region (Associated Policy Authority) and regional stakeholders (Regional Stakeholder Group).
On one hand, AFIL identifies challenges and needs of the regional ecosystem, as well as potential opportunities and innovative solutions for strengthening the sector. On the other, the Cluster keeps Lombardy Region and the stakeholders informed on the progress of the project, while organising moments of sharing and exchange on sector developments at European level.
In this regard, AFIL’s participation in the Learning Visits, organised in the regions involved in the project, is aimed at exchanging best practices and knowledge among the various value chain actors at European level, thanks to the contribution of project partners. Furthermore, the Cluster is responsible for organising a Learning Visit in Lombardy in May 2026.
Opportunities for AFIL Members
Through AFIL’s participation in the CHARGE project (and the Learning Visits), Cluster Members have the chance to remain updated on policies and instruments adopted in other European regions on the topic of batteries.
Among the potential opportunities, Members can share their experience in the battery sector and compare their vision with similar actors from other European regions. A central role in this regard is played by AFIL’s Strategic Community De- and Remanufacturing for Circular Economy, a working group that receive financial and logistical support from the project, including support for Members’ participation in Learning Visits in partner regions.
Finally, given the central role of Lombardy Region in the project, Members have the opportunity to benefit from a direct communication channel with the regional authority, with particular focus on the Lombardy ERDF 2021–2027 — the key policy instrument within the CHARGE project.
